Gainesville Highlight: Palm Point Park

Located on Newman's Lake, Palm Point's natural beauty is unreal. It's a good destination for fishing and birdwatching, but not archaeological digging. Never crowded, it's the best natural spot in Gainesville. It's full of interesting flora and fauna: there are cypress knees and Spanish Moss everywhere and some strange growth formations below the canopy. At low tide, at the tip of the peninsula, you can get a panoramic view of the whole lake.

Don't go on the weekends because it gets crowded with fishermen.

Brand New Brandou

When I first saw this painting, I immediately thought of the Christmas Critters episode of South Park. I soon discovered that this association was not completely unfounded because the artist who created it, Andrew Brandou, has done extensive cartoon animation such as work on The Simpsons in earlier seasons, the Rugrats, and some work on Invader Zim. Despite the grotesque nature of some of his works, I find it cutesy and nostalgic. It reminds me of the illustrations from A Wind in the Willows.

Medication

This is about the Jim Jones kool aid mass suicide. I think this is a really provocative and beautiful piece. The whole series is really intriguing. At first I was put off by his style because it relies a lot on trendiness and is poorly drawn, but then I looked at more and realized that that this didn't matter because he was really inspired. The "As a Man Thinketh, So He Is" series is an example of this.

This is from the "After Audobon" series which uses more "pop culture" references, but they're pretty tasteful, so it won't make his art seem dated in years to come. He uses a lot of gold leaf in his paintings, and you can't really see that on the internet. He's Portland based, and he does a lot of exhibitions (including one in Deland, Florida). Okimi

Get on your 3D glasses because the works of Kimiaki Yaegashi will irritate your eyes if you look at them for too long. The color illustrations worked much better for me with my Red/Blue glasses than the originals, and they're a little less if you don't happen to own a pair of 3D glasses (but with all movies being released in 3D now, why don't you have some? I have at least 3 pairs hanging around, and they've gotten me through some dull days).

There wasn't much I could find out about Okimi that was written in English, so I'm just going to add a lot more images. They were a lot of fun for me, and they will be for you too. I will admit that the images are a little plain and repetitive. Visit http://okimi.com/ and you'll see what I mean. Hopefully there will be newer works which contain a little more depth and are a bit more lively in the future because I feel like the 3D is just used as a gimmick which distracts from a lack of ideas. I'm glad that 3D is gaining popularity, and I hope to see some more interesting pieces from Okimi in the future.
